10 Product Photo Types To Try On Etsy

Did you know that Etsy LOVES it when you use all 10 photo slots in your listings?

10 photos might seem like a lot, but with this helpful product photo ideas checklist, you’ll have no problems at all. Here are 10 ideas for types of Etsy photographs to choose from. You could mix and match, have 2-3 of one type of product photograph or, if you’re feeling fancy, see if you can get one of each.

Before we get stuck in, here are my Etsy product photography top tips:

1- Take photographs using lots of natural daylight. Well lit photographs and natural daylight look way better than poorly lit or artificial lighting.

2-You don’t need a fancy camera. Your phone is fine but before you start, clean your camera lens! It makes SUCH a difference.

3- If you can, use a tripod to avoid camera shake.

4- Use relevant props if appropriate.

5-Clean your product before you photograph it. Make sure it is as close to perfect as possible.

6- Take photographs from lots of different angle. Take more than one photo so you can choose the best ones for your Etsy listing.

7- Always edit your photos before you post them. You can do this in your phone settings if you don’t have access to editing software. Try making your photos a smidge brighter, up the saturation a tiny bit and see what happens when you increase or decrease the contrast.

Now, it’s onto the main event.

10 Easy Photo Ideas For Etsy Listings

1- Lifestyle shots– show your product in use, with a person if possible. If your item is wearable, show someone wearing your product. If it’s a mug, show someone holding it. Create a vibe, show how good your potential customers will look when they use your product.

2- Studio shot with plain white background. If white doesn’t look good, add some colour.

3- An image to show scale. Similar to the lifestyle shot, but less about the function of your product, more about the size and scale. Include familiar objects to give customers an idea of how big your product is. If your product is a print, show it on a wall next to a plant, window, door or shelf… you get the idea.

4- Close up details. Get up close and personal with your product. Take photographs that show tiny details, textures, surfaces, patterns etc.

5- An image to show your making process. Perhaps you painting your artwork, throwing a pot, sewing or hand-finishing your product.

6- Variations. If your product has colour, size or material variations, show each one. You can also link photos to variants in the Etsy listing editor.

7- Different angles. Show your product from the top, back, inside etc.

8- Your packaging. Offer gift wrap? Show your audience! Have fancy boxes or stickers? Shout about it!

9- A photo of you in your workspace. Slightly different to the process image, show yourself in your studio, desk or kitchen table. People LOVE to see behind the scenes. The fact that you are a real person, making your products from your small studio in your home, garden or workshop is your small business secret sauce.

10- Make a flat lay. This is a product shot from directly above, with other relevant items around it.

So there you go, 10 easy photograph ideas for your Etsy listings. I challenge you to have fun with it, get creative and see what you can come up with. If you love your photos, chances are your audience will too. There’s nothing worse that looking at a boring listing with a boring or poor quality photo.

Bonus points if you can also make a 10 second video of your product to upload as well (Etsy loves that, too!)
