Why You Need To Know Who Your Target Audience Is

Understanding your target audience really is the key to creating effective marketing and developing products that will sell. When we know exactly who we are talking to, we can understand what motivates them, how they make their decisions and what their pain points are (pain points are common challenges and problems that need solving).

Creating a persona (or more than one persona) can really help give you a focus for your brand. But it can be tricky to identify information about your target audience if you don’t have access to any real data or people to ask. It’s ok, I’ve got you.

A Super Easy Way To Identify Your Audience’s Common Pain Points

In all honesty, finding out this information without access to statistics and data may feel impossible, but actually it’s quite easy to do when you know how.

You’re going to head over to ChatGPT. Yep, that’s right, we’re going to ask AI for some help. You need to have a bit of an idea so you can ask the right questions, but I’m going to break it down for you.

Here is a Chat GPT prompt I’ve created to help you identify your audience’s pain points, motivations and priorities. You just need to copy and paste, and to fill in the blanks. The more information you can give, the more you’ll get out of this exercise, so feel free to expand.

“I have a small business and I sell (insert what you sell/make. Be as specific as you can). I sell my products on (Etsy/my own website/notonthehighstreet) and my customers are mostly based in (UK/US/etc). My products are mostly (low cost items/luxury items/high price points/etc). My customers are mostly (male/female) and (Boomers/Gen X/Millennials/Gen Z- pick which is most appropriate. If you don’t know, have a rough guess at their age). My customers buy my products because…(insert reason here- could be they are buying gifts for their closest family or friends, they like handmade items or something else). Help me to develop insights around my perfect customer, including their motivations, goals, shopping habits, priorities and common pain points.”

You’ll probably get a helpful reply with some useful information about your ideal audience and their behaviours, needs and pain points. You can then dive a little deeper with further prompts like:

Tell me more about my ideal customer’s pain points.

What is important to my ideal customer?

Give me some ideas for blog posts that will appeal to my ideal customer

Summing Up

AI can be such a helpful tool when it comes to identifying your ideal audience. The more information you can give it, the more you’ll get out of it. Just one tiny word of warning, AI can make mistakes, so do bear this in mind.

Go have a conversation with Chat GPT and see where it leads you. You could even ask it to help you with content planning.
